Gujjus traditionally had their houses attached to their shops so that they are available 24x7
- Wal-Mart is open 24x7 (The top executive go to work at 6.30 in the morning and work till late evening)



3) "Simple Living, High Earning"

Even after becoming the World's biggest company, no one can guess that from their HeadQuarters at Bentonville. Just like all the Patels who are known by their Kanjoosi !

Silly-ance Cheatale (Reliance Retail)


Who is going to win?


I think its going to be neither.


Let us examine the current state of Retail in India:

Upon examining, I've observed,


1) Visiting a mall is associated with "entertainment" and not necessity

Example: "Hey I'm getting bored. Lets go hang out in a mall"


2) Home delivery is the most important aspect in Indian Retail Economics.
Example: We Indians tend to buy vegetables on a daily basis.

Most malls don't have home delivery service. If they do have, Like HLL's Sangam Direct, you have to place a minimum order, which is usually above Rs 250
Your local sabjiwalla on the other hand will come running to your house even for an order of Rs 10.


3) "Shopping" in our country is usally associated with Celebrations and festivals.


In my belief, The Great Indian Retail (TGIR) will divide the country into 3 groups:

1) Comprising of 5% of the population
Those who go to shopping at Wal-Mart, watch movies at Fame Adlabs, and shout "You Asshole!" during traffic-jams.

2) Comprising of 30% of the population
Those who buy stuff from mom-n-pop stores but occasionaly at Malls, watch movies in single-screens, and shout "Chutia" in local trains.

3) Comprising of the Remaining, although the Government will say 10% of the Population
Those who don't skip food 5 times a week, who watch movies after going to sleep in DreamLand, and shout...

Shout? LOL ! Who hears them anyways?
